Acclimation of adrenalectomized rats to low environmental temperature.

چکیده

EVERAL authors have interpreted the S adrenal hyperactivity of normal animals exposed to low temperatures (1, 2) and the reduced cold resistance of adrenalectomized animals (3-5), as indications of the importance of the adrenal glands in the acquisition of resistance to low temperatures. However, in studies on acclimation to other types of stressing conditions (6, 7) it has been found that adrenalectomized animals, not treated with adrenal hormones, would develop a certain degree of resistance if maintained on a saline drinking solution and exposed only gradually to the stressor. The possibility that cold resistance might be developed in adrenalectomized animals under similar conditions has been considered in the present investigations. In a first series of experiments, cold resistance of normal and adrenalectomized rats with or without implanted DCA2 pellets was compared after warm or cold acclimation. In a second series, cold resistance was determined in adrenalectomized warm and cold acclimated rats that were examined, by three different methods, for evidence of accessory or regenerated adrenal tissue.

Cold-impaired cardiac performance in rats is only partially overcome by cold acclimation.

The consequences of acute hypothermia include impaired cardiovascular performance, ultimately leading to circulatory collapse. We examined the extent to which this results from intrinsic limitations to cardiac performance or physiological dysregulation/autonomic imbalance, and whether chronic cold exposure could ameliorate the impaired function. Wistar rats were held at a 12 h:12 h light:dark (...

Effect of adrenalectomy on the renal response to chloride depletion in the rat.

These experiments were aimed at investigating renal behavior towards chloride, as distinct from sodium, during dietary deprivation of these ions in adrenalectomized rats. Adrenalectomized and shamoperated control rats were maintained on saline for 3 wk, then chloride conservation during a very low chloride intake was assessed both with an abundant sodium intake (as buffered sodium phosphate in ...

Effects of adrenalectomy before weaning in the genetically obese Zucker rat (fa/fa).

1. Lean (Fa/?) and obese (fa/fa) Zucker rats were adrenalectomized or sham-operated at 19 d of age (3 d before weaning). Injection of corticosterone for 3 d after weaning (1.0 mg/d) was necessary to ensure survival of adrenalectomized fa/fa but not Fa/? rats. Intact and adrenalectomized fa/fa rats had a lower rectal temperature than Fa/? animals before and 3 d after adrenalectomy. The post-wean...

Changes in regulator of G protein signaling-4 gene expression in the spinal cord of adrenalectomized rats in response to intrathecal morphine

Introduction: Regulators of G-protein signaling protein negatively control G protein -coupled receptor signaling duration by accelerating Gα subunit guanosine triphosphate hydrolysis. Since regulator of G-protein signaling4 has an important role in modulating morphine effects at the cellular level and the exact mechanism(s) of adrenalectomy-induced morphine sensitization have not been fully cl...

Low Levels of Physical Activity Increase Metabolic Responsiveness to Cold in a Rat (Rattus fuscipes)

BACKGROUND Physical activity modulates expression of metabolic genes and may therefore be a prerequisite for metabolic responses to environmental stimuli. However, the extent to which exercise interacts with environmental conditions to modulate metabolism is unresolved. Hence, we tested the hypothesis that even low levels of physical activity are beneficial by improving metabolic responsiveness...
